Choosing a dog bed and/or crate
Do you need a dog bed for your dog or are you thinking about crate training? If you are choosing a bed or a crate there are plenty of options for you to consider based on the size and preferences of your dog. The following is what you can keep in mind when shopping.
Dog Beds
Size and Shape – Dog beds are made for any size dog, and come in various shapes including round, rectangular, square and oval. You can even purchase dog pillows. When selecting a bed, think about the size of your dog and his sleeping habits. For instance, does your dog really sprawl out or generally sleep curled in a ball? Make sure you take your dog’s measurements, and remember that it’s always best to choose a bed that is bigger than one that is smaller.
Comfort and durability– Regardless if you think a certain color or style bed may match your décor; you only want to purchase a bed that is going to provide your dog with the best comfort and is durable. The bed itself should be firm and not flimsy. You will want the bed to last your dog a long time. Therefore, if the full-grown crate is too large for your puppy, use a divider panel until he is completely matured.
Plastic or metal? – Plastic crates are ideal for traveling and are usually the only type of create acceptable for air travel. That being said, metal wire crates are the better choice for the home. They often provide the dog with more room, and are sturdier.
Crate accessories – All crates require crate bedding, such as a create pad. This will make the crate much more comfortable. You may also want to include a small fuzzy blanket, and a few favorite toys to keep your dog occupied while he’s in there so he doesn’t resort to chewing on the crate. Finally, a crate bumper helps to protect your dog from injury, as it is used to line the walls and prevents tails and paws from sticking through the wire.
