The English Bulldog – A Little Giant

There are few animals that serve as a contradiction more than the english bulldog. Its appearance suggests a fierce nature; its nature suggests a lovable slob, something much different than its origins intended. This breed was meant to fight bulls (yes, something this small could take down something that powerful in the battle arena. It was an aggressive dog that could holds its own against anything. Now, it is more content to watch the world, rather than fight it. The english bulldog is a gentle breed, despite its appearance, and has little of the qualities once favored for it.

Of course, that is not to say that this stocky animal would not fight to protect itself or its family. The english bulldog makes an excellent watchdog and can be an excellent deterrent to those with bad intentions. After all, would you want to attack something bred to kill bulls? This dog can fight and will if the situation calls for it. Luckily, that is a rare thing and you should only get to see his gentler, happy nature. The english bulldog loves his family and will show it constantly.

Despite its appearance, the english bulldog is not always a sturdy breed. It is prone to certain health issues like sensitivity to weather, breathing problems due to its flat nose and also hip problems. You will need to check for reputable breeders to help limit these but, even a healthy english bulldog, averages eight years. That is not a long time when compared to other dogs.

Still, those years will be happy ones. This is a low maintenance breed in practical terms. They are lazy, to put it bluntly, so an inactive family is no worry. They are also easy to groom with their short coat. Training is usually easy, assuming you establish dominance. The english bulldog needs to understand that you are the boss. That means verbally scolding him if he growls at you and forcing him to walk behind you, rather than leading you. These steps are necessary to keep your english bulldog from thinking he is the leader of the house.

If you can establish control over this breed, you will find a loyal and happy companion, content to sit beside you or protect you if the need should arise.
